“MOM! That’s Ms. Martinez, Mom!“, shouted the Little Lady across the grocery store, little index finger pointing sharply at a dark-haired woman evaluating pork loins in the butcher’s refrigerated case.
“Shhhhhhh! You don’t need to shout …. or point. Who is Ms. Martinez?“, I replied, quickly bringing her extended arm down to her side.
“That’s the teacher in the cafeteria who always crowds me.”, she said in a way too loud stage- whisper. My pixie daughter moved closer to me. “Every. Single. Day…. she crowds.”
My radar picked up — crowding?
“What do you mean?“, I asked in what I hoped was a nonchalant tone.
“Ugh…“, (with great dramatic flair) “She thinks you have the best pick collection and always wants to see what’s in my lunch. She took a picture today! And then, that Ms. Martinez tried to take one of my bats and walk off. I said, ‘Now, Ms. Martinez, you give that BACK! She just laughed and put it in my hand.“, and by this point, my Little Lady had a hand on her hip and her head was zig-zagging back in forth to emphasize each and every word.
Seriously. A drama queen.
The lunch in question? The “Batty” lunch shown above. It seems my Halloween pick collection is getting coveted.
But, I have a sneaking suspicious the Little Lady isn’t as put out by the lunch-time attention as she pretends. Monday night, as the hungry girl dug into her dinner and announced she wanted the leftovers for lunch, the Little Lady added: “And, don’t forget to put some of those Halloween picks in for Ms. Martinez to see!“
