I Heart Lunch: Grown-Up Lunches

A Grown-Up Bento (in an Easy Lunchbox System)

(In upper, larger section) A Simple Garden Salad: Baby Greens (Kale, Beet, Mizuna, & Spinach), cooked Spaghetti Squash, sliced Baby Cucumber and fresh Raspberries with Balsamic Vinaigrette in the little red container.

(In the smaller compartments) one Hardboiled Egg, Colby and Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Red Seedless Grapes.

Fact: Mommies and Daddies need to eat too.

Last week, a beautiful (and strange) happened.  I had lunchtime all to myself.  It was a thing of urban legends: no children around … a gorgeous, sunny, crisp day … a clean house.

I didn’t know what to do with myself.  How could enjoy this freedom?  WHAT would I do?

As I wondered aimlessly through my living room, I spotted a book on my shelf — an old favorite.  Instantly, I knew how my child-free moments would spent.  I was going to read.

Ugh — I can’t TELL you the last time I opened a book.  I still remember the day I learned to read; I was homeschooled by my mother and she sat across the table, explaining letters and sound … and it clicked.  From that moment forward, I was rarely without a book.  I read anything and everything I could get my hands on.  As I grew older (and a wee bit rebellious at times), my mom used my love of the written word as a disciplinary measure.

In other words (hehe), she would ground me from reading.

AND it was TORTUROUS!!!!

This stage of Mommyhood often feels like those days from my childhood when I was grounded from reading … not allowed to pick up a book and get lost in the imagination of someone else.

Busy schedules, the need to feed people and to keep little Kidlets healthy and whole often (OFTEN) means I go days, weeks, even months without the chance to feel the fibrous texture of paper between my finger tips as I turn page after page after page.

(Sigh …. it will change right?)

But, this quiet day was a gift — the chance to once again be “Me” and to enjoy “me time”.

Mommies need that as much as they need to eat… maybe even more.
