Yesterday … oh, yesterday. WHAT a day.
It rained all day, and while that moisture is very much needed here in Texas it meant that my preschool class of 2 and 3 year olds were stuck indoors all. day. long.
For an introvert who needs some mental downtime every now and then during the day, it can get draining to hear nothing but the excited and joy-filled screams of little ones. This teacher’s ears (and brain) need a break by the end of the day!
Tired, I came home and attempted to make sense of my home — trying to figure out why dirty socks were flung in weird, out-of-reach areas and why a lunchbox (FROM. LAST. WEEK.) had been hidden in a closet.
Then, in the late afternoon, my Mother sent a text to let me know one of her family members had died. And, for my sweet Mama’s sake, the tears began to flow.
I tried to process it all and was left exhausted — more mentally so than physically — and absolutely NOT in the mood for dinner prep.
And I decided … that it was a night to break my own rules.
Tonight was a night for a good ol’ fast-food sandwich.
Since childhood, Arby’s was my favorite fast-food chain. Our small Oklahoma town didn’t have a ton of choices when it came to popular restaurants, but an Arby’s it did have. I loooooooooved the soft buns, shaved roast beef and the Arby’s Sauce. OH, the Arby’s Sauce!
It stayed my favorite place even through college, when I would grab a sandwich on road trips or order one as a study-break meal. I was most definitely an Arby’s girl.
Now, while I was always a roast beef girl during my younger days, this new Arby’s® Smokehouse Brisket Sandwich might be my new guilty-pleasure on those days when I just neeeeeeeed some comfort food. As the Husband said last night in between bites, “I wouldn’t have thought you could pull off fast-food BBQ, but this is good.”.
Yeah… good. Smoked brisket — tender meat that is full of authentic smoke flavor, smoked Gouda cheese, BBQ sauce, Mayo …. all topped with crunchy fried onion rings. It’s rich. Decadent. Comforting.
(since I’m not a Mayo girl, I could have done without that … and some fresh onions or pickles would have been a perfect way to brighten the sandwich … but, um, yeah. For my first bite of fast-food in months and months and months? It was amazing.)
The verdict? It was a guilty pleasure night that hit the spot. Comfort food when I needed it.
